Functional indications ("Article 13")
Functional or Article 13 health claims shall be described or referenced in:
- the role of nutrients or other substances in growth, development and the performance of bodily functions,
- psyche and behavioral functions,
- weight loss, weight control, weight loss, reduction of hunger, increase of satiety, reduction of dietary energy.
Examples:
- "Vitamin A is necessary for normal vision"
- "Sea buckthorn oil has a beneficial effect on the digestive system"
- "Contains bifidobacteria that strengthen the immune system"
Functional health claims based on current scientific knowledge or which include a requirement for proprietary data protection - 13.5. Article 2 references.
Indications of reduced disease risk
Health claims referring to the reduction of a disease risk or claims referred to in Article 14.1a.
They state that the consumption of a food significantly reduces the risk factor for a human disease.
Examples:
- „Plant stanol esters have been shown to lower blood cholesterol levels. High cholesterol is a risk factor for coronary heart disease”
- „Sugar-free chewing gum neutralizes plaque acids. Plaque acids are a risk factor for caries”
Guidelines for the development and health of children
Health claims referring to children's development and health or claims referred to in Article 14.1.b..
Examples:
- „Vitamin D is necessary for normal bone growth and development in children”
- „Iron promotes the normal cognitive development of a child”
- „Indispensable fatty acids are necessary for the normal growth and development of children”
